What is Cycleau?

Cycleau was a transnational co-operation project focusing on the rivers of South West England, Western France and Ireland. It was based on the water cycle and dealt with whole river catchment's as a single entity, from source to sea.

What were the outcomes?

First Order Stream Survey
There were approx 150 water bodies designated as been at risk or potentially at risk from pollution. Furthermore there is an additional 70 water bodies within the Moy catchment that have been designated as not been at risk or potentially not at risk.  The designation of these water bodies was based on an assessment of the land use, water quality data that has been derived from the EPA monitoring sites for the past 30 years and hydrological-geological analyses of the water bodies. The initial stage of the FOSS (First Order Stream Survey) work that was undertaken by Moy Valley Recourses as part of the Cycleau project involved the assessment of water bodies currently at risk or potentially at risk. This assessment verified the validity or not of the current designations.

Catchment Profile
A catchment profile of the Moy catchment has been completed with all the necessary data processed for the profile and developed into a documented report.  Information contained in the profile was obtained from a variety of sources i.e. Mayo County Council, EPA, Central Statistics Office, Teagasc, North Western Fisheries Board, National Heritage & Wildlife section of the Department of Environment Heritage & Local Government, The Marine Institute, Geological Survey of Ireland and Bord Iascaigh Mhara.

GIS Modelling
A GIS dispersion modelling system that combines fresh water and marine waters has been developed to produce a decision support management tool. The model utilised the bathymetric data compiled for the Moy estuary.  The model was developed by MarCon Computations with expert advice and guidance from the WRBDP.
