Mayo Street Games Festival – are you interested in taking part?

Are you an organisation or community group that provides activities for younger people? If so, Mayo North East invites you to take part in a new initiative to encourage children to play outdoors and learn traditional games.

Mayo Street Games Festival will take place the week of October mid-term break (Friday 25th of October to Friday 1st November 2019).  If you would like to plan a child friendly event that would teach children street games, songs, dance and activities please use the booking form attached to send the details of your event and Mayo North East Leader Partnership will include the event in the Festival brochure and promotional material.  Your street games activity could be part of an already planned mid term childrens’ camp, or an entirely new event.

The date of Friday 25th was intentionally used as a start date as schools might like to organise fun Street Games Activity on Friday 25th before schools finish for mid-term. It might be one hour, or a few days long.  Games could be taught indoors or outdoor, weather-dependent. The aim of this “festival” is to encourage children away from computer games and TV and teach them FREE or relatively cheap games that they can adapt and play among friends in their own community throughout the year.

A booklet is attached with a range of suggested games, songs and activities for your group to teach children. If you choose to use alternative games, please send the rules to me by email to to be added to the booklet! Groups are encouraged to link in with adults to find out about traditional games, folklore and share the rules and the memories of outdoor play, as this makes for a very good inter-generational project within your community.

Please adhere to child protection, insurance and safety guidelines at all times. Mayo North East looks forward to hearing your plans if you intend to join in on this festival!   Give Rita a call with any queries – 087 0507049.
